10.50 Echolocation in People: Definitions and Applications, Dr. Lore Thaler, Durham University, Department of Psychology, UK

Echolocation is probably best known in relation to bats. Yet, people can echolocate, i.e. people can use sound echoes to get information about the spatial environment. In people, the term echolocation has been applied quite widely and includes using echoes from cane tapping sounds, the ambient sound field, to whistling, finger-snapping or clicking with the mouth. 

The presentation will outline recent research showing the benefits of mouth-click based echolocation in particular. Studies that highlight the benefits of mouth-click based echolocation for mobility as well as for cognitive-spatial rehabilitation will be discussed.

3.00 Technology - The Power and the Promise: How Technology is Changing Lives Regardless of Disability or Impairment.

Robin Christopherson, of the leading UK inclusive tech experts AbilityNet, will challenge any preconceptions you may have about the potential of technology. Robin, who is himself blind, will be talking about (but more importantly demonstrating) a range of inclusive technology and how it has the power to change and even transform people's lives regardless of ability or impairment.
