Register of Vision Rehabilitation Specialists and Qualified Habilitation Specialists

The purpose of the register is to:

  • protect, promote and maintain the health of people who use the services of Vision Rehabilitation and Habilitation Specialists;
  • promote and maintain public confidence in the profession;
  • promote and maintain proper professional standards and conduct for members of the profession. To be on the register all registrants will have to have qualified through an approved training route.

It is vital that the public, employers, commissioners and workers have a clear understanding of the professional risks associated with practice.  Vision rehabilitation is focused on enabling people who are losing (or have lost) their sight to do things they used to do with sight and some of these are intrinsically risky.  Poor practice, or practice undertaken by an unqualified worker (where they are untrained for a specific risk) creates avoidable risk.  RWPN has created an "Assessment of Professional Risk" associated with the key tasks of a Vision Rehabilitation or Habilitation Specialist. The final page of the document provides a matrix for understanding the documented risk.

Where a member of the public or another professional has a concern about one of our registrants they can raise a concern or complaint about them, which we will investigate.   If, after investigation, the concern is upheld, we may issue a sanction.  A sanction is way of helping the registrant to learn from the situation or, in the most serious cases, preventing them from practising for a specified period of time. See below for more information about concerns and sanctions.

RWPN's register is an Accredited Register with the Professional Standards Agency, and has been endorsed as best practice by ADASS (Association of Directors of Adult Social Services) and Visionary (the representative body for local Vision Impaired Charities and organisations). ADASS Vision Rehabilitation registration Position Statement Autumn 2022.docx.pdf

As registrants on an accredited register, our eligible members are entitled to use the Accredited Registers Quality Mark (registered Trade mark UK00003077914), and are encouraged to do so in order to promote their professional status and raise awareness of the  programme.

Only those on the Professional Register and working in the UK can use the Quality Mark, and only for as long as they remain on the register.  If you are aware of anyone else using the Quality Mark, this is misuse and must be reported to us so that we can take further action.  Please email details to members@rwpn.org.uk
